Literacy Shed

Stuck at home with our snowstorm, I'm on Twitter, Google+, reading class blogs, and just surfing around. One of my Twitter friends, tweeted out about this exciting resource that fits with our course, Integrating Technology and Literacy. The site's title, Literacy Shed, caught my eye, so I started exploring, and invite you to, also. Take a look at what the site offers, and let us know if the site sparks ideas for your teaching or in general. Without further ado, link to the site; just click on the image.

Okay, I know you can get lost in exploring the site, but come back here to post a comment to share what you find and like.

  1. I got sucked into the inspiration shed a bit. I love the animated war accounts. They don't pretain to my grade level but the lesson ideas could be adjusted to any grade or subject. I especially loved the idea associated with "The Piano." Compiling a group of objects related to a theme seems like a great way to introduce a new unit. Students love looking at and touching tangible items; the activity will foster conversations about how the items are connected or related and why they are important to that particular theme.

  3. What a great site, thanks for sharing! I liked the picure book shed, it had a video for one of my favorite books Owl Babies. I read this book with my class every year now I will have a video of the book for them to watch in addition to me just reading it to them.

  4. I loved the reading shed... in particular one of the images, a depiction of the "rights of reading". I feel like that poster should hang in classrooms everywhere, lots of good points to remember. I think a lot of the "rights" are crucial particularly with reluctant readers. Giving students the option to read what interests them, or to abandon a book that doesn't, takes some of the pressure off of the experience and leaves room for more genuine enjoyment.

  6. What a great resource, I love the Literacy Shed! This is a resource that can be used to tap into a student’s creative side to inspire writing skills. The structure of the site is perfect for any educator. Providing interesting topics (I reviewed The Video Game Shed, The Film Trailer Shed and The Light House) and lesson plans with detailed instructions on how to get a writing sample started really makes this an all-inclusive site. As I was looking at some of the writing topic themes, I realized the site would be a great resource for college students in any English Composition course. The video game and the movie trailer themes could be related able for college students. This is another method to integrate technology and make writing fun. I can see students having a creative writing contest, posting stories to a class blog and having other course sections reading and posting about their literacy works. I wish we had this type of technology when I was in school. Students today are lucky to have technology build into their classroom curriculum.
